What is Integrative Oncology?

Integrative oncology is a patient-centred approach to cancer care that combines conventional cancer treatment with evidence-informed complementary approaches.

Rather than replacing your oncology care, the goal is to work alongside your medical team to support your overall health and wellbeing throughout the cancer journey.

Depending on your individual needs and treatment plan, this may include support for nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, treatment-related symptoms, metabolic health, and other aspects of quality of life.

Conventional Care

Chemotherapy • radiation • surgery • medications

Integrative Support

Nutrition • lifestyle • acupuncture • symptom support

Whole-Person Care

Physical health • emotional wellbeing • quality of life

Individualized Support Through Your Cancer Journey

Every person's cancer experience is different. Your care should be, too.

Nutrition

Support for maintaining adequate nutrition and strength during treatment, managing changes in appetite or taste, and navigating nutrition questions that arise during cancer care.

Physical Health & Lifestyle

Individualized guidance around physical activity, sleep, stress management, and maintaining muscle and physical function.

Treatment-Related Symptoms

Integrative strategies may help support quality of life and manage certain symptoms associated with cancer or its treatment.

Supplements & Natural Health Products

Evidence-informed guidance on supplements and natural health products, including consideration of potential interactions with cancer treatments.

Survivorship

Support doesn't have to end when active treatment does. We can work together on nutrition, metabolic health, healthy aging, and long-term wellbeing.

Supporting You During Treatment

Cancer treatment can affect much more than the tumour itself.

Depending on your needs, we may work together to support:

  • Maintaining adequate nutrition and protein intake

  • Appetite and dietary challenges

  • Changes in taste or smell

  • Digestive symptoms

  • Fatigue

  • Sleep

  • Stress and emotional wellbeing

  • Physical activity and strength

  • Treatment-related symptoms

  • Safe use of supplements and natural products

Your cancer treatment remains the foundation of your care. My role is to provide additional, evidence-informed support that complements your oncology treatment plan.

Care Beyond Cancer Treatment

Finishing active treatment can bring a whole new set of questions.

How do I rebuild my strength?
What should I eat now?
Why has my weight changed?
How do I manage menopause?
How do I reduce my risk of other chronic diseases?
How do I feel like myself again?

Survivorship care provides an opportunity to focus not only on cancer recurrence, but also on your long-term health and quality of life.

Areas we may address include:

Nutrition & dietary patterns
Muscle & physical function
Metabolic health
Cardiovascular health
Weight & body composition
Sleep & stress
Healthy aging

A Thoughtful Approach to Supplements

Supplements aren't automatically safe simply because they're natural.

Some supplements may interact with medications or affect the way certain cancer treatments work. Others may have evidence for specific symptoms or situations, while evidence for many commonly promoted products remains limited.

I take a personalized, evidence-informed approach to supplement recommendations, considering your cancer diagnosis, treatment plan, medications, goals, and the available evidence.

I don't recommend supplements simply because they are marketed as "anti-cancer."

Integrative Care Works Best as Team-Based Care

Your oncology team knows your cancer treatment. My role is to provide additional support that complements that care.

With your permission, I can work within the broader healthcare team and take your diagnosis, treatment plan, medications, and other health considerations into account when developing your care plan.

Conventional oncology + naturopathic care

Different roles. Shared goal: supporting you.

Who Can Benefit From Integrative Cancer Care?

You might be looking for support if you are:

  • Newly diagnosed and unsure where to start

  • Currently undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy, endocrine therapy, or other cancer treatment

  • Experiencing treatment-related symptoms or nutrition challenges

  • Interested in evidence-informed integrative approaches

  • Transitioning from active treatment into survivorship

  • Looking to rebuild strength and support long-term health after treatment

You don't need to know exactly what you need before your first appointment. We can start by reviewing your history, current treatment, goals, and concerns and determine where integrative care may be helpful.
